Date Truffles made with my CSN Stores food processor!

The food processor that CSN Stores sent me to review came in.... and it's awesome!

The first thing I decided to whip up with it was date truffles! If you've never made these you should give them a try, so tasty, easy, AND healthy!

All you do is throw some dates, nuts, and dried fruit in your lovely food processor - no cooking required!

My beautiful processor along with my truffle supplies.

I added whole dates, cashews, and an organic dried fruit mix that had apples, pineapple, pears,  and a few more fruits I'm forgetting. I never measure, just add until it looks right. Mine turned out a little dry so I also added a tiny scoop of coconut oil so they would stick together.

Look at how well they blended up!  I was so impressed with how easy the processor was to use and fast to clean, it also has suction cups on the bottom so it doesn't slid when you're using it. I used it to make cauliflower "rice" too, worked like a charm!

Then you just roll them into balls and coat with coconut flakes or ground nuts or ground date powder! Yum! The whole family loves these and this is our "candy" of choice. They freeze great too!

Always start with date but then you can add almonds or walnuts or peanuts and then add in chocolate or dried cherries or lemon pulp, be creative!

CSN to the resure...again!

I am very excited to announce that CSN Stores has offered me another opportunity to review one of their products! You remember them of course, they have over 200 stores offering everything from console tables to food processors to adorable espresso cafe play tents!

I love  the ease of ordering from CSN Stores and their customer services is amazing. You remember the awesome griddle I received last month? I'd be so lost with out it now, I use it every. single. morning. and for lots of suppers too. At one point I must have gotten a little too excited because I somehow snapped the temperature control dial off! I was a little hesitant to contact customer service at first because sometimes that can be so frustrating. It was so easy, quick, and painless though! All I had to do was log into my account, click on my griddle order, and right there is a form to send in where you explain what the problem is. In a few days I had a new dial on my doorstep! (And yes....I'm being a lot more calm with this one!)

So stayed tuned for another fun review and while you wait go check out CSN Stores, they really do have everything!

It came!!!

And it's HUGE!

I mean, I know it was going to be big.... but I was still shocked when I saw the box!

I think I scared the UPS man. "Oh wow, it so big....I've never seen one so large!" Heh. He might never come back...

Of course I was referring to my awesome griddle that CSN Stores sent me to review! Here's our youngest getting all excited over the box, not the griddle mind you... he just wanted the box. "I fit in this box mommy!" (That's our oldest doing her homework in the background, or trying to do it. Kind of hard to concentrate with everyone going crazy over boxes and huge griddles.)

It looked even better out of the box! (The box that out youngest ran off with as soon as it was empty.)
Don't I look happy with my new toy? :-)
I'm trying to decide what to cook on it first!

We used it THREE times the first day and TWO times the next day and three more times today!!
*swoons*

Did I ever tell you that we could not for the life of us find a griddle when we lived in N. Ireland? Not sure if they just don't have them or if they are called something else but I never found one.

Anyway, I used this baby to make pancakes, oh I guess they should be called "griddle cakes" (12 AT A TIME!!! My mom could have really used this when she had all us kids running around the house.), and burgers, and chicken patties, and steak, and eggs and even cookies! It has a tilt in it so the grease runs down into a little trap but that means you have to wait for it to be really hot to put your eggs and pancake batter on it they will run. It works perfectly, and is easy to clean, just a wipe down as it's non-stick. In fact the only problem I have with it is that it's too big to fit in my cupboard! We use it so much though, that I found a spot for it on my counter. It's really sturdy so I think it will last for years and years!

It's so perfect for when I stumble into the kitchen in the morning with 3 hungry kids waiting to be fed because I can fit 6 eggs and 6 pancakes on it!! They are done in minutes, saves me so much time in the morning.

You can read all about this griddle HERE.

Oh, and these are the yummy cookies I made on them!

CSN Stores to the rescue!

Have you been to CSN Stores yet? Man, they have everything from Dinnerware Sets to Safes! (I've wanted a safe since I was a child, probably because I thought the money came with it!) They have over 200 stores, filled with everything and anything.

I admit that I have been drooling over their electric griddles! I spend far too much time flipping one pancake or burger at a time, today was the worst because it was the kids first day back at school and they were in a hurry and hungry and not happy that they had to wait so long for their pancakes to get done in my tiny skillet!

So, I was over the moon when CSN Stores contacted me and asked if I would do a review of one of their products! "Ship me a GRIDDLE!" I screamed while jumping up and down. (Ok, maybe not...but only because I didn't want to scare them away.)

You'd be excited too though, look at this baby!

I can't wait for it to get here so I can tell you all about it! So stay tuned!

Proflowers Reivew: Bonsai Tree!

Thanks to Proflowers, I had a neat opportunity to review one of their Bonsai Trees! Well, acutally there was a whole list of items to choose from including gift baskets full of yum (soooo tempting!)...but as soon as I saw they had bonsai trees I knew that's what I had to review....because my husband has wanted one for years! I even let him pick out which one to review, which was hard for him because they have so many!

ProFlowers has lots of nifty gifts for just about everyone that could possibly be on your list and for every occasion that there is or for no occasion at all. They even have an organic fruit basket! And they have "dinner & flowers" which has a restaurant gift card attached to the bouquet - such a neat idea!

But I really, really love the bonsai tree gift idea, because these trees last forever....flowers die and chocolates get eaten up but if you give one of these...they can look at it and think of your love for them every day...for many, many years!

Our tree was delivered in a cute box today and our 4 year old was so excited and stepped all over my toes trying to keep up with me as I carried it to the table.

As soon as I got the top off he looked in and screamed "It's a wee tree!". (Still using those UK words. lol)
It was packaged very well, very secure in there.  There was even a gift message on the outside for me, which made me feel so special!

I lifted it out, aw so cute, and saw that it had even more wrappings around the base, that tree was very well protected!

Everyone loved the little/wee tree and oohed and awed over it and debated over where the best place to put it would be. For now we put it on the coffee table so it can be admired by all! It was really fun to receive the tree in the mail and the whole family enjoyed the experience!

I'll be bookmarking ProFlowers for sure, to have on hand for gift ideas. I have lots of friends who would love a wee tree. :-P

***Ended*** Yummy Earth Giveaway! Yum!

THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED!!!

I'm so excited about this giveaway because Yummy Earth is one of my all time favorite companies!

I have been a huge fan of their products for years! Seriously, I almost cried when I tasted my first mango tango and thought "I can't believe my son will be able to eat this awesome candy!" They are organic; allergen-free; gluten-free; GMO-free; egg-free; soy-free; nut-free; casein-free; dairy-free, and made all-natural with fruit extracts; red cabbage and purple carrots for color; and no artificial dyes or flavors. Not only are they safe for almost all children with dietary issues, they are the best tasting candy I've ever had - I'm addicted to the Mango Tango myself. I've never met a person who didn't like them, all the kid's friends beg for them when they come over. (The parents do too!)

I keep them in my purse to trade my kids when they receive candy from banks and medical staff. I think the best day of my life was when I had ordered a container of suckers from Amazon and they somehow sent me two instead (But only charged us for one.). I called them to ask if we should send the other one back and they said "Nah, just keep it." Our whole family jumped up and down with joy!! My son gave the second container to his doctor and said "This is for all the kids like me, who can't eat your yucky ones." lol

Yesterday, we went to buy fireworks and they had a bucket of dum-dums and the lady asked if my kids could have one and I said "No way! Here, how about WE give YOU one of OUR suckers and see which tastes better?" :-)

When we traveled to the UK and only took 2 bags each...guess what my bag was filled with? Yep, Yummy Earth Suckers! The grape ones were a huge hit there because the locals had never heard of anything being grape flavored! That's right....no grape anything. Instead they had black current flavored candy. Which was...odd tasting to say the least.

Oh and we also found that these suckers work great at preventing car sickness!  Alex and I get car sick, well we did in AR, the roads are so straight here that we are "cured" for the time being, but in AR it was horrible but as long as we were sucking on one of the sour lollipops....we were fine!

Yummy Earth was started by 2 dads and has always been all about pleasing the customers. They really listen to their feedback and give parents exactly what they need for their children.

I'll never forget the day that we bought a bag of mixed flavors, and the kids were so excited and dividing  up all the flavors and...oh no!....the bag said there was supposed to be wet-faced-watermelon but there wasn't a single one! They were crying and upset and my oldest said "Can you email them and asked them what happened to the wet-faced-watermelon?!" I didn't really expect a reply but went ahead to appease the children and....was so surprised when Rob himself (Co-Owner) emailed me back and said to tell the kids they could stop crying because he was sending them some watermelon suckers! I knew right then, I'd never buy another brand.

I even used them last year to make Jarod a candy bouquet for his classroom birthday party. The whole class LOVED it!

The flavors are just out of this world with names like Pomegranate Pucker, Too Berry Blueberry, Mango Tango, Strawberry Smash, Googly Grape. Very Very Cherry, Sour Apple Tart, and Wet Face Watermelon...how can you NOT love them? They can be found online at Amazon (I buy them in bulk!) or at most any health food store. (The health food store in Grand Rapids even has them!)

When I decided to dedicate this month to reviews of foods that are safe for children with allergies, of course I knew I'd be including Yummy Earth. I also decided to email the company and see if they'd like to offer a giveaway....and Rob emailed back and said they sure would!

The GRAND PRIZE winner will receive, straight from Yummy Earth, a 5oz bag of gummy bears and a 3oz bag of Fruit Lollipops!

And then I will pick 3 winners and I will send each one an envelope containing 5 lollipops from my stash! (You know I love you if I'm willing to give up my precious suckers!) I can address them to your children if you'd life, kids love to get mail!

Mother's Natural Cereals (Review)

I'm always on the lockout for cereals that are naturally sweetened. We don't do HFCS, white sugar, or artificially sweetened.

We actually very rarely use maple syrup, honey, or molasses either. Cereal is about the only food I buy that's sweet. If we want something for dessert or to snack on it's usually fruit or I make something with Stevia. There is one amazing organic product, made with organic evaporated cane juice, that we do splurge on- Yummy Earth Suckers. But more on that later! (Teaser....We'll be doing a Yummy Earth Giveaway Soon!)

I might sound like a big, huge meanie of a mom but that's what works best for our family. None of us handle sugar very well at all and our bodies thank us for refraining. The kids don't suffer either, I've been experimenting with healthy baking for years and years and know how to make some really yummy desserts, ones that even die hard sugar fans love.

But sometimes I don't feel like spending all day in the kitchen whipping up a decadent chocolate cake or we have to run out the door but the kids need a snack for in the car.....that's when I fall back on cereal.

Up until now I haven't gotten excited about any of the cereals. I mean, they are ok. They taste fine and fill us up but they didn't give me that "OMG, So yummy!" that you get from say...Captain Crunch. I loved his peanut butter crunch!

However, a few days ago I was in Cubs and saw a new cereal on the shelf....Mother's Bumpers Cereals.
They had a cocoa one AND a peanut butter one! I threw both in my cart for the kids as we had so many different doctor's and therapies this week that I knew we'd need snacks for waiting rooms. Of course as soon as I got home and the kids saw the attractive boxes they tore into them and started shouting about how good they were. Rebbeca even said "Are you sure we can eat this? It's so sweet and yummy!" So I rechecked the ingredients and there was only honey and molasses listed.

Then I made the mistake of eating some....OMG, so yummy! Tasted just like my favorite childhood cereal! I'm not ashamed to admit I ate a huge bowl of it right there. And hid the rest so I could have another bowl later. :-)

What's nice is it is made with corn so my wheat-free child can eat it too! And it goes great with our rice milk so our dairy-free family members enjoy it also! In fact, all of us love it!

Sadly, I even have a spot just for this cereal listed in our budget....*blushes*

And I just saw that I can buy it by the case from Amazon......do I really need a case of cereal?

I might. lol

I did not receive compensation for this post. (I'm just a HUGE fan!)

We have a winner!!!

I'm excited to announce that a winner has been picked by random.org!!!!

Comment #79, Nelsby, is the winner!!!!

Congratulations, enjoy those Dr. Scholl's Scream sandals! :-P

Thank you to everyone who played along, I had so much fun checking out all your blogs.

Have a great day!

*ENDED* CSN Stores Giveaway!

**********************THIS CONTEST IS OVER*******************

I am very excited to be hosting a giveaway for CSN stores! One lucky winner will receive a $40 gift card that can be used at any of their 200+ sites! This is a wonderful opportunity for the lucky winner because they carry everything! Whether you're looking for Lights, Cookware, Bedroom Furniture, Home Theater Seating, Kids Rugs, ShedsFitness Equipment, or anything in-between...they are sure to have it! In fact, I'm not even sure how the lucky winner will choose what they want because there are too many options! They also advertise hassle free returns and free shipping on lots of their products, which is a huge positive for me as I hate dealing with sites that have inadequate return polices.

I spent a long time browsing their amazing fitness site and day dreaming about how Jason and I could fill our bedroom up with all sorts of workout supplies and be buff in no time. :-)
Given our current "lack of a chin up bar because our doorways are weird so normal bars will not work" issue we have been giving some thought to either purchasing or building a freestanding chin up bar, of which they have a variety. They also carry resistance bands, weights, and yoga mats if you're ready to get hard core with your P90X workout!

Spotlight on the Rapids: Restore Review

Habitat For Humanity Restore
1336 East Hwy 169
Grand Rapids, MN
55744
218-999-9099

I wouldn't classify this store as a thrift store because they do not have clothing, it's more of a second hand furniture and discount home improvement store in one. It's pretty awesome. The price of their furniture is less than you would pay at the area thrift store but more than you'd pay at a yard sale. Then they have all the doors, window, paint, lights, sinks, and anything else you'd want for your home. I love to just look around and fix things up in my head, "Ooh that would make a great table." or "Hmmmm, I could paint that black and it would be so cool."

Pros: Lots of room and lighting
         Large varitey
         Great prices

Cons: I had a tiff with them.
          Because they made a mistake.
           And I wanted a refund.

That's right. I actually stood up for myself. I learned how to do this in Ireland where they have no concept of "The customer is always right" so you have to fight for what you want. Though I didn't have to fight as hard as the locals because I could get far with my cute American accent. :-)

Any way I went in and asked for a queen size bed frame. They said they had one and sold it to me, it was clearly labeled as a queen....in 3 different spots. I had the kids with me so couldn't fit it in the car so my MIL picked it up for me later and I dragged it inside, put it together, took Rebecca's mattresses out of her room, dragged the frame in her room, and then....tired to put the mattress on her bed frame. But it didn't fit! The frame was too small! I got out my measuring tape and measured it and...it was a full size frame! I was frustrated but no big deal as I figured I could just call them and exchange it for a real queen size.

I called and a really nice man answered and I told him what had happened but he said they did not have any more queen size frames. Well that's fine says I, I'll just take a refund and go get one at the Salvation Army as I need one today. I'm sorry says he, but all sales are final. Well that wasn't acceptable to me so I nicely asked him if he could take my name and number and have someone from the office call me back. He was nice, as all the volunteers who run the check out desk always are.

So 30 minutes later a woman from the office called and we had a little chat.

Restore: I'm sorry but we do not offer refunds, all sales are final.
Me: Yes, I understand that and if this was a normal sale I would accept that but the fact is I bought what was supposed to be a queen size bed and it was not.
Restore: We can offer you an instore credit.
Me: That would be wonderful, IF you had another queen size bed for me, but you don't so I have no need of a store credit at this time. I'm not trying to be difficult but I need a refund so I can go to another store and get a bed frame today.
Restore: I'm sorry but we have signs posted that say "All Items Are Sold As Is. No Refunds"
Me: Hah, well my item was not sold to me as is...it was sold to me as ISN'T. (I thought this was a funny play on words and giggled. My stupid giggle is always getting me in trouble.)
Restore: (She didn't think that was very funny and got a bit upset with me at this point.) I can't help you, do you want to speak with my manager?
Me:  I would love to.

So, I was transferred to another man and he was nice. I told him that the Restore had made a mistake on the frame, so it was of no use to me and he sighed and said he'd issue me a refund. (Wish I could have talked to him first....)

So I took the frame apart, dragged it back outside, in the rain, and spent 15 minutes trying to fit it in my car. Then I drove to the Restore, dragged the frame back out of my car in the rain, and lugged it into the building. Where the nice lady at the front said "Oh, you must be The Bed Frame Lady. Greeaaaat,  I have a new nickname. She picked up the phone, pushed a button, and said "The Bed Frame Lady is here." Another woman from the office came down, handed me my refund, and walked back into the office. (I'm really sorry I had to ruin her day but I bet from now on they'll measure those bed frames before tacking on incorrect tags.)

So in culclusion...Would I shop there again?

Absolutely.
It's a great store, with great items and prices, and the front desk staff are always nice and helpful, and in the end, even though I had to fight a little, they did correct their mistake with a refund.
The only reason I would hesitate about going back would be because I'm afraid their would be an invisible sign on my forehead that says "THAT BED FRAME LADY". lol

And next time I might take a tape measure with me.

No more lists!

I've been planning meals, menus, and shopping lists for over 13 years...that's a lot of time....my time. Time I could have spent on oh I don't know....daydreaming about not having to make lists?

Don't get me wrong...I'm good at it. My family eats well and our meals always fit into our budget but it does get hard to try to come up with new recipes ALL the time, every week of my life I'm trying to find time to jot down items we need at the store, find recipes, and figure out what I need for each recipe . We also try to eat as much as a Paleolithic Diet as we can, which makes it hard to find recipes as we try to stay away from rice, pasta, wheat ect. (Similar to a low-carb diet)

13 years of lists!

Our anniversary is on Monday. Our 13th if you didn't catch that. (It's ok maybe you haven't had your coffee yet. I'll wait.)

Jason asked me what I wanted....at the time I was trying to decide if we should have beans or peas with our Tuesday meal. That's what's hard about meal planning, here it is on a Friday and I have to wonder if I'll feel like beans or peas a week ahead of time. (Now that you've had your coffee you probably noticed that he was asking me about our anniversary only 2 days before the actual event...HEY at least he remembered! That's good enough for me!)  I'm tired of making those decisions! I want someone else to make them for me. It's summer....I want more time to enjoy the sunshine and not stare at a list wondering if pork or chicken would be good next Thursday. There's only 3 months of good weather here folks....and then we'll be stuck in the middle of a winter wonder land with nothing to do and then I'll gladly submit to menu chores again. (We'll maybe not gladly but when your choice is make a menu or go outside and get frostbitten....menus win.)

"I want 3 months off from list making hon, that's what I want." thinking to myself: Good idea Mary, let him
have to be in charge of the lists, let him see how frustrating it is to try to come up with meal after meal after meal and make a grocery list to go along with each one each week. Hah! While I sit back and enjoy the break.

My first clue that my husband is a genius should have been when he just smiled and said he'd be right back. No protests? No "I can't make 3 months of menus, no way"? Had an alien taken over his body? Maybe he'd start doing the dishes every night too! (Hey...reach for the stars....)

5 minutes later he came back and handed me a weeks menu, a LOW CARB menu, using items that were ON SALE this week, and a grocery list of everything I needed to make the menu WITH RECIPES!

As Liz Lemon is so fond of saying "What the what?!"

I checked the clock again...yep only 5 minutes had gone by.

"You'll get one every week for 3 months....Happy Anniversary!"

No....he's not superman and he didn't really come up with a weeks menu in 5 minutes. Well he did but not all on his own.

Remember when Jason was getting his BA and he had to drive one and a half hours to school everyday and one and a half hours back? And being the poor college family we were we had no cell phone or MP3 player or even a working tape player in the car? In fact even the FM radio was broken so all he could listen to was AM talk radio shows, remember that? Well one of those shows was Dave Ramsey. And low and behold that guy recommends e-mealz, a menu planing program. A program that gives you a menu of your choice (he picked low carb) for a store of your choice (Wal-mart was the only one in our area) with a shopping lists every single week for 3 months for $15 total. And my darling husband thought of this place while I was whining about needing a break. (We won't mention  the fact that he heard of this place YEARS ago and never mentioned it to me until now....hey how was he supposed to know I could use a break, I never mentioned it until now. Plus back then we never had a spare $15.)

I'm really excited! I'll keep you updated on how the new meal plan is working out! If it saves us money and if the recipes fit our eating habits etc. And if it save me time....you'll know because I'll have more time for blogging! hah!

Area Thrift Store Reviews

When I first moved here I was very impressed with the options for thrift shops, yes indeed my frugal heart just overflowed.

After months and many, many visits to each store I've now figured out the pros and cons of each one. There are three.

* Friends for Animal Welfare

Located at the junction of Hwy #2 West and Cty Rd #63
Phone: 999-5611

Pros: Lowest prices of the 3
Little bit of everything, clothes, furniture, and household.
Really good clearance sales - their $1 bag sales rock!

Cons: Hard to navigate through the store with kids.
It's kind of dim in the store.
The clothes can be outdated at times.

This is the store to go to if you want the best deal, I love just browsing through all the shelves as you never know what you might fine. Because of this store I am the proud owner of a newer toaster oven that works great, for just a couple dollars!
I buy the kids play clothes here during their dollar bag sales and always look here first when I need any household items.

* Goodwill
1202 Northwest 4th Street
Phone: 326-6843

Pros: Really nice clothing of the latest fashion
They offer a rewards card program
Staff are always really pleasant and helpful

Cons: Mostly clothing, not much furniture
Clothing prices are the highest of the 3
          The racks are overstuffed.
I go to this store when I need nice outfits and for the kids school clothes. They also have a really good selection of board games and puzzles! If you keep an eye out you can also find lots of New In Package gift items, which are great to have on hand for last minute birthday parties. They also offer a weekly tag sale, though you have to get their early as the items go fast.

* The Salvation Army
E US Highway 169
Phone: 326-4847

Pros: Largest of the 3, you're sure to find what you're looking for.
Lots of room and light inside the store.
Features daily specials, including half price Wednesday

Cons:  Furniture prices can be outrageous.
Not right in town, it's out of the way.
Hard to find staff if you need help.

This is the store I go to if I can't find what I'm looking for at the others, as they will be sure to have it. While you can find great deals here, good prices on the clothes - higher than FFAW but lower than GW, I'm shocked at times by the prices they have on the furniture, lots of times the price will be the same or just a little less than buying it new..for a used and worn item! They do have great prices on liens and household items though.

Stop by one of these thrift stores today and help support your local community!

Next on Spotlight we'll discuss the Restore, Freecycle, and Craigslist!

5 Steps to a Thrifty Vacation ( & Edgewater Review)

We combined our Memorial Day weekend with our son's 4th birthday for a truly terrific vacation, full of thrift of course. Since his birthday is in the summer he always ends up with an awesome outing on his special day, for his 2nd birthday we went to Branson, Mo and for his 3rd we went to the zoo in Belfast, N. Ireland. This year he really lucked out because I had learned the secrets for a bargain vacation...

STEP ONE: Go Local

I know it's possible to find some great deals on airfare and that's great but if you want a really low price for your vacation take advantage of your nearest city. An added bonus is that less travel time means less stress for you and your family.
Tickets to say...Florida, even buying the cheapest ones possible would have been around $200 each for a total of $1000 but we'll say $500 total since it's possible we would have come across an awesome deal. Though if we wanted to fly anywhere we'd have to travel 4 hours to the airport, which would be even more money for gas.
When we decided to try to find a fun designation for our get-a-way we look at Duluth, MN which is an hour and a half drive from our tiny town. A quick Google search lead us to the Edgewater Resort & Waterpark Hotel on beautiful Lake Superior. At first glance the prices seemed really high but since we were following step two, this wasn't a huge concern.

Step Two: Plan Ahead

Now it's certainly possible to decide to go on a trip a week beforehand... but you'll pay out the nose. (Anyone know the origin of that saying? I couldn't find the meaning online and now it's bugging me.)
Let's take our trip as an example. I started looking at ideas around 6 months ahead because we were in the middle of the horrible winters here and I thought looking at summer ideas would make me feel warmer and it paid off because at the time they were running a special! So instead of paying the full room price of  $239 we only paid $109! And not only was this just a room, it was a room inside a hotel with a huge indoor waterpark! So room and attraction all in one, plus another swimming area outside, mini golf, basketball, playground, and arcade! (If you are booking ahead make sure you read your hotel's cancellation policy beforehand. )

Step Three: Don't be picky about the date

If you are open to staying in hotels midweek or on a Sunday, lots of times you get a discount or extra amenities. Since we opted to stay on a Sunday we were also given a free pizza dinner, with drinks, for us all and an extra large room was available, with a micro-wave, fridge, king size bed, 2 TVs, and 2 sets of bunk beds! (The fridge and micro wave were a huge benefit for step five.) The room (pictured) was just like having 2 rooms as the kids were off in their little section.

Step Four: Look for free attractions before you go

I found an online guide of Duluth that had a list of fun or cheap things to do in the city.
Since our theme for Alex's birthday was "Splish Splash" we decided to go watch ships come in and out beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge  (pictured)
and take a visit to the Great Lake Aquarium
The first of which is free for all and the second was free for us because our awesome library offers free tickets to local attractions and they gave us 5 tickets to the aquarium, worth $55! ($15 for adults and $9 for kids) We LOVE our library! It's always a good idea to stay updated on what your library offers for locals. Another option is to call the attraction yourself and ask if there is a discount for locals, lots of these places don't charge you the tourist price is you live nearby or they might offer a "free admission to locals day" once or twice a year.

Step Five: Take your own food

This is an very easy way to save huge amounts of money and so easy! I simply packed a box of bread, peanut butter, jelly, lunch meat, cheese, mayo, burritos, popcorn, snacks, juice, and a birthday cake. This was all items I had on hand and food we wold have eaten those days anyway so no extra cost to us, except for the cake. Know how much we saved by doing this?

Let's take a look at the menu at the hotel and our schedule.

We ate breakfast at home before leaving.
For lunch we had ham and cheese sandwiches, chips, and water.
If we had eaten at the hotel we would have paid $4.95 each to have hotdogs. Saved $25
Dinner was the pizza and drinks we got for free, rounded out with the burritos since the pizza was on the small side. (I planned ahead for the possibility that the pizza would not fill us all up.) If we would have had to pay for dinner for us all from the hotel it would have been around $35 at the least.
For dessert we had Alex's birthday cake! The hotel has little birthday cakes for sale but they come with a large price tag. At first I was going to bake a cake but I knew it would be hard to transport since I don't have a cake carrier, instead I kept an eye out at Wal-Mart until I saw the one I wanted go on clearance for $3 and then I bought it and stuck it in the freezer since it was weeks ahead of time. Another $20 saved.
After swimming all night we were hungry again later so we had our snacks and popcorn. Saved us the $10 it would have cost to raid the snack machines.
For breakfast the hotel offered a free breakfast bar (if they hadn't we would have taken fruit and muffins) and for lunch we made PB&J sandwiches. On the hotel menu PB&J's are $3.95 each so another $20 saved.
Whoa.....that's $120 we saved on food!
If you can't get a room with a micro-wave and fridge you could take a cooler and toaster oven or just pack food that doesn't have to be cooked. I remember on vacations that my mom would bring an electric skillet, a crockpot would work also. If you run low on food you can swing by a grocery store in the area.

So, let's recap!

We saved:
At least $500 by staying local and not needing airfare or lots of gas.
$130 on our room
$55 on attractions
$120 on food

That's $800 we saved on our trip!
Plus ended up with a larger room, free food, and free attractions!
We had an awesome vacation with all this for only $109 plus gas!

Everyone had a blast, it was a wonderful, stress-free vacation! The kids are all begging to go back, it really was a great resort and we will probably do another visit there for Jarod's birthday in November. The waterpark was open until 10pm so they swam for hours the first day and our check out wasn't until noon the next day so they have time for more swimming the next morning! They did not want to leave! Loved it!
Oh they also had board games you could borrow! And all the staff were super nice and helpful and the rooms were very clean and there were plenty of lifeguards walking around. It was nice that our room was right next to the waterpark because we could go back and forth to our room with ease.

In fact the only things that made us think "Hmmm, this could be better." was the breakfast. They advertise a "Deluxe Breakfast Bar" which made us assume it would have hot foods but we ended up disappointed because it was just cold items, cereal, juice, donuts, muffins, and such. The kids were happy enough but Jason and I were expecting biscuits and gravy, eggs, and sausage or at least some waffles or pancakes.
No big deal though, next time I'll just bring some of my frozen pancakes or something.

*Oh and one more thing, don't forget that the most thrifty trip of all is the one you win! You can read all about the trip to Washington DC that Rebecca won in 2008 HERE.

Ok....who's ready for some photos?! :-)
